House system, Anything But Square
How the Downtown McKinney staging site was built: the Steeple house structure carrying the district's own brand.
The brief
A fast, functional, mobile-first launch a small team can maintain. District-as-navigation (Visit Fort Worth), the Destination Bryan page set (Historic Downtown, Dine Around Downtown, Shopping, Nightlife, Downtown Parking), and Downtown Boise's operating model: recurring events as permanent pages and one merchant list feeding the site and the printed directory. Visual direction from the Anything But Square brand toolkit.
What is here
- Every page in the live /downtown section, 53 in all, rebuilt on the same URLs: dining, the nineteen Tastemaker profiles, shopping, arts, all four signature festivals with their sub-pages, community events, the calendar, event opportunities, parking and the trolley, Downtown Dollars, the Grandma Stand, about, contact and a human-readable sitemap.
- One new page, Downtown After Dark, filling the Nightlife slot in the Bryan model with copy the section already had.
- Each festival is a permanent page family with its own sub-navigation, so next year's dates are an edit, not a rebuild.
- FAQs are native accordions, schedules are real tables, and every video is embedded on its own page. No script runs on these pages except the page shell.
Palette
PMS 3035 is the ink and the ground for dark bands. The house paper is the page ground so the brights read as brights. Each section owns one secondary colour for its tiles and the sticker lockups, in the toolkit's own combinations: red, teal, blue, magenta and lime carry the most weight.

Type
Headlines are Big Shoulders Display, the condensed face closest to the toolkit's hand-drawn lettering; it is already the house eyebrow face, so the Downtown and Visit McKinney sites share a typographic root. Zilla Slab carries card titles and lead paragraphs, Figtree the body. All three are the house faces, self-hosted at deploy.
Graphic devices
The tag-shaped sticker lockup (a rounded tile with a tab) is built in CSS and used for the home headline and the menu. The toolkit's doodle line art is the texture on colour tiles, the menu and the footer. The woodcut square illustration is the brand's own and appears on Home and Shopping. The footer waves are the house device in the ABS palette.
Mobile first
Every layout is one column by default and widens at 620, 760, 960 and 1080 pixels. The nav is a single pill with the logo, a Downtown Dollars button and the full menu; primary links appear from 1080px. Tap targets are 44px, the menu locks page scroll, and motion respects prefers-reduced-motion.
What is deliberately not here yet
- The events calendar and trolley tracker are live widgets on the current site; here they link out until the feed and tracker are wired in.
- Sponsor placeholders ("SPONSOR_1_URL", "Sponsor Logo") on the live pages are dropped rather than carried.
- Forms (registrations, newsletter) point at their existing destinations.
