After dark, the district comes alive with venues offering live music, craft cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Where the square goes after dinner
Downtown McKinney is part of the McKinney Cultural District, which allows alcohol bought from a licensed downtown restaurant, winery or authorized festival vendor to be carried while walking, shopping or sitting within the district. Posted signage marks the few places it is not allowed, including the city parking garages and some parks.
The pubs, wine rooms and cocktail bars below are all Tastemakers with their own story and film. Live music runs across the district most weekends; Visit McKinney keeps the music listings.
TUPPS Brewery
A block east of the square at 402 E. Louisiana St., TUPPS pours its own beer in the old grain silo campus, with a lawn, a taproom kitchen and a full calendar: open-mic Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. and live music on the lawn on Saturday nights. Taproom hours run Tuesday to Sunday; closed Mondays.
The Courthouse Theater
The restored county courthouse at the centre of the square is the district's stage. Its resident companies, McKinney Repertory Theatre, the Young Actors Guild and the McKinney Community Band, fill the season with productions and concerts, and the building reopens after its 2026 restoration with the courtroom's history restored around the stage.
Live music
Most weekends there is music somewhere on the square: patios and wine rooms on Kentucky and Louisiana, the lawn at TUPPS, and festival stages during Oktoberfest and Home for the Holidays. Visit McKinney keeps the running list.
Late, not lost
Every public parking space downtown is free after 5 p.m. and all weekend. The free trolley runs Thursday to Saturday until 7 p.m. and Sunday until 5 p.m., so plan the ride in and the walk back. Rideshare drop-off during festivals is on the west side of Mitchell Park along Benge Street.
